Interesting observation about the progression of the classical renewal over the past 40 years. It caught my attention because it's exactly the reverse of the order in which they should be pursued according to Dr. Timothy Patitsas in his "The Ethics of Beauty". I don't know what that says about the classical renewal or the way forward from here (if it does say anything), but I find it interesting nevertheless.

I am glad you noticed this! I admire Patitsas greatly and think there is much good to say about his "beauty first" pedagogical recommendations. My categories are very rough, and certainly there were many who turned to beauty earnestly in the early years of the renewal. But even as we seek to renew classical education, we do it to a large degree influenced by the way we were formed in progressive institutions. It takes a while, years, to wrestle free of our own formation and return to what education once was--or should I say, to what it is.

I was thinking over it some more yesterday, and I am certain that there was a vision of the Beautiful in the beginnings of the renewal - there was something about classical ed that caught the attention of those who pursued it and gave them the desire to pursue it devotedly, which did lead to the goodness of all the work involved in starting schools and learning how to realize it even more fully, which has in turn led to the realization of the truth that Beauty matters. It all comes full circle in the end when we pursue it with our hearts in the right place

Good point. Truth, goodness, and beauty are all intertwined and lead to each other. Many have said, for example, that beauty is the radiance of truth. My categories must be taken with a grain of salt as a loose organizing scheme.

Jeff, I am not sure why this is happening. It seems to work on both Safari and Google Chrome browsers. Here is a link to the second one that you might try here:
