Great article! On a related note, while I teach English, I despair that multiplication tables aren't taught these days. Some facts you just need for fast recall.
When I taught classical logic, I found it nearly impossible unless students had their A, E, I, and O statements memorized.
And don't even get me started on spelling. A primer and memorization wouldn't hurt either...
